18-year-old dies after motorcycle accident near Myerstown

An 18-year-old Lebanon County man was fatally injured in a motorcycle crash this week, state police said Saturday.

Zachary J. Stump of Myerstown was pronounced dead in Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center where he was flown by medical helicopter after the crash Thursday about 12:30 p.m. in Jackson Township, which borders Berks County, troopers from the Jonestown station said.

According to investigators:

The two-vehicle crash happened on West Washington Avenue, just outside the borough of Myerstown, several miles west of Berks.

Stump, who was riding a sport motorcycle, was traveling east when the motorcycle collided with an SUV driven by Michael T. McCowan, 65, of Myerstown. McCowan had pulled from the rear parking lot of a business.

The motorcycle struck the front fender of the SUV’s passenger side.

McCowan was evaluated at the scene for a minor injury

The crash remains under investigation.
