From Wyomissing Public Library
2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, one of the best-known and beloved English writers. She is the author of several novels that deal with relationships, manners, and culture of early 19th-century England, including Pride and Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Emma.
To mark the occasion of her anniversary, the Wyomissing Public Library will present a free public program, “The Enduring Popularity of Jane Austin,” on Wednesday, Jan. 29, starting at 6 p.m. The presenter is Attorney Paul Savidge, a life member of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) and a member of the Society’s Board of Directors. He is the former head of the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of JASNA. A devoted Janeite, Paul has presented at national and local Austen events. He has a particular internet in rare books related to Austen and her times.
The library will also host a Book Club devoted to Jane Austen and her works; the initial meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 10, starting at 6 p.m. Anyone with an interest in the author is welcome to attend. On Monday, Feb. 24, the library will show the film, Sense & Sensibility, with Emma Thompson.
Other commemorations of Austen’s life and work will be scheduled as the year goes on.
