Abilities in Motion Creates Consumer Independence Fund

from Abilities in Motion

Abilities in Motion (AIM), an organization focused on providing services, support, and advocacy to help individuals with disabilities live independent and self-determined lives, has established the Abilities In Motion Consumer Independence Fund (CIF) to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities directly. The CIF is designed to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities that prevent independent living at home or in the community.

“The board of directors established this fund to further support AIM’s mission of providing individuals the resources and support to live independently in the community on their own terms. By providing financial assistance to pay for items like wheelchair batteries, ramps, and other barriers to independence, we solidify our commitment to directly serving our local disability community,” stated Michael Gerhard, board chairman. “Our team will work with the individual, family, or representative to determine the need and recommend qualified suppliers or contractors.”

The CIF can also assist individuals in need of other services including van repairs, specialized equipment, transportation to treatment, or other necessary indirect expenses that are not covered by insurance.

“Our goal is to directly impact individuals and families that cannot afford the costs associated with accessibility adaptations or specialized equipment needed to stay or become independent in the community,” added Stephanie Quigley, chief executive officer of Abilities In Motion.

Applications are reviewed monthly by a committee to review eligibility which is determined by an evaluation of available resources. A representative from AIM schedules in-person visits to verify the need for the request.
