Addison Benner leads Brandywine Heights to win over Fleetwood in girls basketball

A career-best performance from freshman Addison Benner lifted Brandywine Heights over Fleetwood on Friday night.

Benner scored a career-high 27 points on a career-high 11 field goals to lead the Bullets to a 50-32 win in a Berks Girls Basketball League Division III-IV matchup at Fleetwood.

“If I didn’t have my team, I wouldn’t be able to get 27 points by myself,” Benner said. “It’s a team effort.”

Led by Benner, Brandywine Heights has scored at least 50 points in each of its last three games and in four of its last seven. The Bullets average 44.2 points per game, which leads Berks IV and ranks fifth in the league.

“We’re starting to gel,” Brandywine Heights coach Don Vinciguerra said. “We know who we are.”

The first half between was largely even as both teams settled into a rhythm on offense. The Bullets pulled ahead late in the second quarter and led 23-18 at halftime.

Brandywine Heights (10-1 Berks IV, 15-3) dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 18-4 to take a 41-22 lead. The Bullets were stout on both ends and capitalized on several Fleetwood turnovers.

“We ran our offense,” Vinciguerra said. “We spread them out and used our athleticism.”

Benner led Brandywine Heights with 12 points in the third quarter. She has scored in double figures in six consecutive games.

“She’s a tremendous player,” Vinciguerra said. “She’s a great asset to our team.”

The Bullets led comfortably throughout the fourth quarter and did not allow the Tigers to gain any momentum.

Brandywine Heights has won five of its last six games by 15 points or more.

“They’re a young team and they got to learn how to win,” Vinciguerra said. “They’re starting to get there.”

Junior Alexis Hess led Fleetwood with 19 points.

The Tigers (6-4 Berks III, 11-8) have lost back-to-back games by 18 points or more.

“We need to bring more energy,” Fleetwood coach Steve Zeller said. “We’re having trouble putting full games together. We have good quarters, but not good games.”
