Art auction planned to benefit Humane Pennsylvania in Berks

One of the biggest fundraisers to benefit animals sheltered by Humane Pennsylvania returns this weekend with a punk rock twist.

The 2024 Art for Arf’s Sake, an auction benefiting Humane Pennsylvania that operates two shelters for homeless or abandoned animals in Berks and Lancaster counties, will be held Saturday evening at its Lancaster facility. The theme is 1977 Punk Rock Revolution.

“This year, we pay homage to the spirit of change that defined the punk rock era, paralleling the significant strides we’ve made in animal welfare over the last few decades,” officials of the organization said in a release.

In 1977, The New York Times heralded it the year that the punk rock revolution began. But that same year, more than 10 million animals were euthanized in shelters across the nation.

Today, things have shifted dramatically. Euthanasia rates have plummeted by over 90%, with an incredible 98% reduction at the shelters operated by Humane Pennsylvania, officials said.

In addition to the two shelters, the nonprofit offers an accredited veterinary hospital, affordable wellness care and boarding services and community support programs.

Officials said just as punk rock challenged the status quo, Humane Pennsylvania believes in the power of advocacy and innovation. Their mission is simple — if you don’t like what’s playing on the radio, you have to write your own song.

The benefit will feature a live auction and silent auction with artwork inspired by punk rock on the bidding block. There will be experiences and street food meant to capture the spirit of London and New York in 1977.

“The evening promises to be a captivating blend of high-class excitement and low-brow revelry, all while championing a cause that impacts our community and countless animals,” officials said.

The event will be held at 2195 Lincoln Highway East in Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $50 for individuals, and include food and an open bar. Tickets can be purchased at humanepa.org.
