Berks coroner identifies driver killed in Route 183 crash near Bernville

A 28-year-old Reading man was the driver killed in a head-on crash Thursday on Route 183 near Bernville, the Berks County coroner’s office said Friday.

Daniel R. Schneider was pronounced dead at 4:54 a.m. Thursday by Deputy Coroner Jonn Hollenbach. He died of multiple injuries and the death was ruled accidental, officials said.

The crash happened in the 6400 block of Bernville Road, which is Route 183, near the Union Canal Paddle Launch along Blue Marsh Lake in Penn Township.

The road was closed for nearly five hours.

Troopers at the Reading station provided this account:

Schneider’s southbound car veered across the solid yellow lines into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming SUV.

After impact, the car rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest in a ditch along the northbound shoulder and caught on fire.

The SUV ended up on the northbound shoulder parallel to the car. Its driver, Christo Cespedes Guzman, 25, of Reading, suffered unspecified injuries.

After treatment at the scene, he was taken to Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center in Bern Township where he underwent surgery. Information on his medical condition was unavailable.

Schneider was the 18th person to die this year as a result of motor vehicle crashes on Berks roads.
