The Berks County coroner’s office said a 27-year-old New York City man was the person who apparently drowned Sunday afternoon in Blue Marsh Lake.
Investigators said Ernesto Feliz was playing football at the Dry Brooks Day Use area along Palisades Drive in Bern Township when the football ended up in the water. Feliz, who reportedly could not swim, went into the water in the area of the sandy beach to fetch the ball and got into trouble and went under, investigators said.
His friends and others amid a large crowd gathered at the swimming area on a scorching day tried to reach him but were unsuccessful.
Emergency crews were dispatched about 1:45 p.m. for a reporting a drowning victim.
Dive crews were summoned and soon set out onto the lake from the boat launch and recovered Feliz’s body. The coroner’s office was dispatched.
Deputy Coroner Melissa Spuhler pronounced Feliz dead at 3:50 p.m.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to officially determine the cause and manner of death.
