The Berks County 4-H Hippology Team recently competed at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH, and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, KY. They earned the opportunity to compete at these two National 4-H Hippology Contests because they won the Pennsylvania 4-H Hippology Contest in May 2025.

The team, consisting of Angelina Shumaker, Kamryn Witman, Megan Salamone, and Natalee Fryer, has been coached by 4-H Volunteer Colleen Witman. They have been working hard, practicing, studying, and preparing as a team for these two competitions.

Hippology is the study of horses, and in a hippology contest, members must take a written exam, judge horses, have identification stations, and answer a team problem. At the Quarter Horse Congress 4-H Hippology Contest in October, the team placed 2nd in the judging phase of the contest, and Angelina placed 10th individually in the judging phase. At the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup Hippology Contest in November, the team placed 8th in the judging phase and 10th in the station phase.

Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a community of more than six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Penn State Extension 4-H youth development educators in all 67 counties throughout the Commonwealth administer local 4-H programs through nonformal education and outreach. To find your local program, visit the Penn State Extension website at extension.psu.edu/4-H.
