Berks County girls basketball: Reading High’s title drought ends

Xiani Beatty scored eight points in the fourth quarter as Reading High came from behind to beat Gov. Mifflin and win the BCIAA girls basketball championship Friday night at Santander Arena in Reading.

The Red Knights last won the Berks title in girls basketball in 2010.

The fourth-seeded Red Knights trailed 49-45 after three quarters, but Beatty made three baskets and two foul shots as Reading High stormed back.

Beatty finished with 16 points and Tamyia Collier had 13.

For the Mustangs, Bella Super had 28 points.

The Mustangs led 16-12 after the first quarter as Super scored six points, Bridgit Martin had five and Jayda Armstrong hit a three-pointer.

Reading High then closed the gap, making it 32-31 at halftime as junior Zaniaya Bradley scored six points.

The Mustangs upped their lead to four points heading in the final period, as Super scored 10 points in the third quarter, including going 6 for 6 from the foul line.

Both teams open play Monday in the District 3 girls basketball playoffs on the road.

Reading High, a 13th seed, plays at No. 4 Mechanicsburg, and No. 12 Gov. Mifflin is at fifth-seeded Central

Dauphin. Both games are at 7 p.m.

Reading High and Gov. Mifflin each beat higher seeds in the semifinals on Thursday night.

The Red Knights knocked off two-time champion and No. 1 seed Wyomissing 40-38. The Mustangs knocked out second-seeded Wilson 60-56.
