Berks County Readers Reach 500,000-Minute Goal — Weebles the Pit Bull Gets a Paw Up

From Reading District Libraries

A two-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier named Weebles is one step closer to her forever home — and it’s all thanks to the readers of Berks County.

Throughout the summer, Reading District Libraries, in partnership with the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, invited community members to participate in Pages for Pets, a reading challenge with heart: if readers could collectively reach 500,000 minutes, the library district would sponsor the adoption fee of a shelter animal.

Berks County readers of all ages rose to the challenge — reading novels, eBooks, audiobooks, comics, and more — and officially met the goal by Friday, July 25. On Monday, July 28, the Animal Rescue League announced that Weebles, a playful and affectionate pit bull, was the pet whose adoption fee had been covered through this community effort.

“We’re celebrating a big win for books and for Weebles,” said Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for Reading District Libraries. “It’s so heartening to see readers of all ages come together to make something wonderful happen. We’re so proud of our community.”

This marks the third year of Pages for Pets. Last year, a one-year-old pit bull named Egypt was adopted as a result of the same challenge.

The program, held in conjunction with Berks libraries’ annual summer learning initiative, continues to grow in popularity and impact — encouraging literacy, compassion, and community involvement.
