Berks County readers have met the challenge to help one lucky shelter pet find a forever home simply by reading books.
For the second year in a row, Reading District Libraries and the Animal Rescue League of Berks County launched an initiative called Pages for Pets. The program sponsors the adoption fee of a shelter pet by encouraging people of all ages to read.
Readers from across the county had until July 26 to successfully read a combined total of 500,000 minutes. Every minute counted toward the financial sponsorship of an adoption at the Animal Rescue League.
That goal was reached.
Marissa Guidara, Reading District Libraries’ youth services consultant, announced Monday that a 1-year-old pitbull named Egypt is the recipient of the Pages for Pets adoption sponsorship.
“Pages for Pets has proved to be such an impactful program for our participants,” she said. “They love contributing towards a community goal and good cause. We are so happy that we’ve helped Egypt get one step closer to finding her forever home.”
Egypt is now available for adoption — without any fees. Her handlers at the Animal Rescue League describe her as very sweet and full of energy. They say she will need a home where she can run so she can get out all those “zoomies.”
Potential adopters can also participate in the Dog’s Day Out program, in which they can treat a dog to a day of fun out of the shelter. This gives the dogs a break from the routine of the shelter, helps relieve their stress and can even lead to adoption.
