Berks County/Lancaster-Lebanon rallied from a three-run deficit after seven innings to defeat Delaware North 8-4 in 10 innings in an opening-round game of the 37th annual Carpenter Cup Classic baseball tournament Tuesday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
In the 10th, after Ephrata’s Drew Hurst and Gov. Mifflin’s Matt Koehler led off with singles, Ephrata’s Coy Schwanger hit a two-run triple. Schwanger scored on a wild pitch. Wilson’s Christo Hunsicker knocked in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
Delaware North had led 4-1 heading into the eighth after scoring one in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Berks/L-L had scored in the fourth on an RBI single by Twin Valley’s Kevin Eden.
Hurst scored on an error in the eighth to get Berks/L-L within 4-2.
Fleetwood’s Aiden Soumas hit a leadoff double in the ninth. Ephrata’s Chase Prange followed with a tying two-run homer.
Ephrata’s Ben Burkey pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit, to earn the win.
Exeter’s Alex Kelsey had a triple for Berks/L-L, which will play in the quarterfinals Friday at 10:30 a.m. at FDR Park.
