From Berks Sinfonietta
Berks Sinfonietta invites audiences to experience the togetherness and homegrown reimagining of music unique to Reading’s own chamber orchestra. True to the Berks Sinfonietta’s dedication to reimagining, audiences can expect a joyful evening of classical repertoire with no sharps or flats in its upcoming concert, “Music in C,” on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place at Atonement Lutheran Church, at 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing.
The program explores the power of the key of C major and minor, featuring:
- Symphony No. 1 in C Minor by Louise Farrenc — A French, 19th-century composer, pianist, and teacher whose symphonic voice is finally receiving the recognition it deserves.
- Symphony No. 28 in C Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — A sparkling example of Mozart’s early symphonic mastery.
- Concerto Grosso in C Major, HWV 318 “Alexander’s Feast” by George Frideric Handel — A festive and dramatic work originally composed to accompany a celebratory ode.
“Music in C” showcases the timeless elegance and emotional depth of classical music, while also shining a spotlight on underrepresented voices like Farrenc.
When asked about performing Farrenc’s first symphony, Artistic Director David McConnell responded: “The orchestra performed Farrenc’s other two symphonies in 2021 and 2023. Rehearsing her music, we quickly learned just how brilliant and exciting it is – and the audience’s enthusiasm when hearing the performances clearly showed they felt the same! So, I am thrilled we are now presenting her first symphony (sadly, she only wrote three), because performing her music is thrilling, and I am sure it will be loved by both seasoned concertgoers and newcomers alike. And how wonderful that this ensemble of locally sourced professional and up-and-coming musicians can introduce listeners to music that absolutely deserves to be part of the standard repertoire – so many unheard riches out there, waiting to be discovered.”
