Bulletin board: Holiday train exhibit to open in Hamburg

The Reading Railroad Heritage Museum’s “Nostalgic Christmas Trains” exhibit opens Saturday at the museum, 500 S. Third St., Hamburg.

The display features vintage and modern model trains in six sizes operating in a holiday setting.  A special feature is a vintage collection of rare Plasticville buildings and accessories from the 1950s.  It tells the history and development of Plasticville buildings and their popular use in model railroading and Christmas displays.

The exhibit will be open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

Admission includes outdoor tours of the railyard led by experienced guides, weather permitting.  Admission fee is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $3 for children ages 5-12 and free for children 4 and under. More information at www.readingrailroad.org

Spirit on Tap

“Caring for Our Neighbors” by Craig Poole will be presented at Spirit on Tap on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading.

As general manager of the hotel, Poole, has sought to hire people who felt hope for Reading and gave them the opportunity to not only change their lives but those of others in the city.

Christmas craft show

A Christmas craft show and holiday bazaar is scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stevens Fire Hall, 91 Stevens Road in Stevens, Lancaster County. Wreaths, woodcarving, crochet, flower arrangements, ornaments, jewelry and more. Admission is free.

Ephrata jubilee

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley, 249 W. Main St., Ephrata, is holding its Christmas Jubilee Open House on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Children are welcome, and Santa will be waiting for them on his special chair on the second floor of the mansion. Christmas music will flow through the house provided by the Tri-M Choir from Cocalico High School. In addition, Mark Herr will play the society’s antique pump organ. Allie Herr will share her musical expertise on the violin.

The print shop will be open with demonstrations of antique printing methods. There visitors will receive a souvenir. Refreshments will be served in the Education Room next door at the research library.

Gift card bingo

A gift card bingo event will be held Saturday at the Shillington Social Quarters, 38, S. Sterley St. Doors open at 11 a.m., and play begins at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Morgantown craft fair

The Morgantown Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown, will host a Teen Advisory Board craft fair and bake sale Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Funds raised will expand library programming for teens.

Teens and adults are welcome to purchase a table to sell their creations. The fee per table is $20 for adults and $10 for teens, payable with cash or check. No refunds. Payments must first be received to reserve a table. Interested parties can also use PayPal to register. Fees via PayPal are $25 for adults and $15 for teens. If paying with PayPal, please indicate craft fair in the comments section.

Admission to the craft fair is free. Setup time for vendors is 8 a.m.

The Teen Advisory Board is asking for donated baked goods to be dropped off Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Dec. 10 from 8 to 9 a.m. Please have baked goods wrapped, with a tag describing what each item is and what allergens may be in the ingredients.

Polish-American event

The Polish-American Heritage Association of Berks County will hold its annual Polish Christmas Eve Wigilia Dinner on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel at 701 Penn St. in Reading.

Doors open at 4:15 p.m. with a cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres at 4:30 followed by the sharing of the Christmas wafer, dinner, singing of koledy, dessert, coffee and tea.

This fundraiser supports the Polish-American Cultural Center at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts.

Hat, glove collection

Keystone Villa at Fleetwood invites the public to help bring warmth to those in need as it collects new hats and gloves to benefit Mary’s Shelter and the Opportunity House.

Now through Dec. 21, drop off donations in the lobby of Keystone Villa at Fleetwood, located at 501 Hoch Road, Maidencreek Township, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Children and adult sizes are needed.
