HARRISBURG – Capital Blue Cross is helping 27 Pennsylvania school districts – including five districts in Berks County – improve the health and well-being of their students through its Live Healthy grant program.
Each Live Healthy grant provides up to $2,500 to help schools encourage physical activity, improve nutrition, and promote lifelong healthy habits. In total, Capital awarded $65,000 in grant funding this year, benefitting thousands of students and school faculty throughout Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley.
“Supporting these initiatives reflects our deep commitment to the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Capital President & CEO Todd Shamash. “By investing in our children’s health today, we’re helping build stronger, healthier communities for tomorrow. We’re proud to help bring these impactful efforts to life.”
Here are examples of the types of programs Capital’s support is making possible in Berks County:
- Fleetwood Area School District | Check and Connect: Introduced the Check and Connect Mentor Program to support K-4 students at risk of disengagement. Through one-on-one mentoring, goal-setting, and family engagement, the initiative promotes academic and social success for students facing attendance, behavioral, or academic challenges.
- Daniel Boone Area School District | Before/After School Physical Activity Program: This K–12 initiative expands in- and after-school programming to boost physical activity and mindfulness. Activities include relay races, nature hikes, crafts, and SEL-based games. Increased demand and earlier start dates require additional funding for materials and staff support beyond contracted hours.
- Governor Mifflin School District | Before/After School Physical Activity Program: Aims to expand its program for middle and high school students, building on the success of a spring pickleball club. Planned offerings include basketball, volleyball, bocce ball, and expanded pickleball, with no activity fees and long-term sustainability through shared equipment.
- Hamburg Area School District | Indoor/Outdoor Physical Activity: Plans to add archery to its PE curriculum starting in fall 2025, offering a new lifetime activity for students in grades 6 through 12 and life skills programs. Shared equipment will support long-term use, with future purchases planned for sustainability.
- Tulpehocken Area School District | Stop the Bleed® Training: Will introduce advanced Stop the Bleed training in the fall for grades 6 through 12 and staff. Certified instructors will teach hands-on bleeding control techniques, including tourniquet use and wound packing. Participants will be eligible for national certification.
