Charity tournament planned in honor of local billiards legend

Ron Stackhouse’s fondness for billiards was matched only by his generosity, and his love for his family.

“He always tried to teach me (billiards) when I was little,” said Amy Ambrose, Stackhouse’s daughter. “He was just an all-around good guy. Always willing to help anyone.”

His passion for the game persisted until the day he died of cardiac arrest two years ago.

“Billiards was his life, he was very popular with a lot of leagues,” Ambrose said.

Now Ambrose aims to honor her father’s legacy — while raising funds in support of organizations working to promote heart heath — by hosting the first Ron Stackhouse memorial billiards tournament.

The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 30 at the Liberty Fire Company Social Quarters in Sinking Spring, from 11 a.m. until a winner is decided.

All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the American Heart Association in an effort to meet Ambrose’s stated goals.

In addition, Ambrose said she is looking to have volunteers from the American Heart Association and the Friends of the Reading Hospital on hand at the tournament to speak about heart health and give lessons on CPR, and the availability of AEDs for local businesses.

“After going through this tragedy, I feel this is something that should be promoted more in the community … you just never know when you could be faced with that situation,” Ambrose said. “If you are a business who doesn’t have an AED, I would encourage looking into the program offered through The Friends of the Reading Hospital to purchase one.”

The event is open to the public. A $30 entry fee is required for participation in the tournament.

Ambrose said the entry fees will be donated in full to the American Heart Association.

Those interested in participating in the tournament can register by email at upaberksschuylkill@gmail.com.

The tournament will also include a raffle, with the proceeds going to the Heart Association. Anyone interested in donating raffle items can call or text Ambrose at 610-568-6456.

Food and drinks will also be available for purchase at the event.
