On Wednesday, Oct. 16, in a press conference held in City Council Chambers, the City of Reading announced the submission of its City Revitalization & Improvement Zone (CRIZ) application, marking a pivotal step in the city’s ongoing efforts toward economic revitalization. Mayor Eddie Morán and State Representative Manny Guzman delivered remarks, emphasizing the significance of this moment for the future of Reading.

Mayor Morán spoke passionately about the dedication and hard work behind the application submission, stating: “Our submission of the City Revitalization & Improvement Zone, or CRIZ, application is the result of countless hours of dedication from our incredible team – staff, volunteers, professionals, elected officials, and community members – who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this moment. Your commitment to Reading is evident, and it’s because of you that we can stand here with optimism for our future.”

State Representative Manny Guzman echoed the mayor’s sentiments, highlighting his belief in the city’s potential, stating: “I believe in the City of Reading more now than I’ve ever done, our time is now.”

Although Senator Judy Schwank was unable to attend the press conference, she shared her support and advocacy through a statement, saying: “It is an exciting day for the City of Reading as we take the next major step in our collective effort to secure a CRIZ designation. Hours upon hours of hard work by so many people got us to this point. There is so much energy and excitement about the possibility of bringing a CRIZ to Reading, and I think we are on the right track to make this happen!”

The CRIZ program is designed to encourage development and revitalization in designated zones by utilizing state and local taxes generated by new businesses to reinvest in the area. The submission of this application signals the city’s intent to bring new opportunities and growth to Reading, fostering a more vibrant and prosperous future for all residents.
