The Animal Rescue League of Berks County has extended a Code Blue it issued Friday through 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21.
Accu-Weather is forecasting a low of 24 degrees Monday night, plus snow and a wind chill that makes it feel like 19 degrees. Tuesday is forecast to have a high of only 30 degrees with additional snow. Wednesday’s high is predicted to be 26. A threat of snow returns Thursday and Friday with highs of 34 and 32. Saturday the thermometer is forecast to only reach 24 and to dip down to a low that feels like 10 degrees Accu-Weather says.
Anyone who owns, possesses or has custody of a dog in Reading must bring the animal inside their residence for the duration of the code, except for supervised and necessary bathroom breaks and exercise during those periods. The measure is part of the Reading City Code, added in 2015. The temperature parameters are a wind chill of 22 degrees or below and precipitation with temperatures below 32 degrees.
Any person witnessing an unsupervised dog left outside in the elements within Reading should call the ARL at 610-373-8830.
Non-compliance can result in the animal being removed from the property by an animal control officer and impounded at the ARL in Cumru Township. An owner could be fined up to $600 and issued a citation for not complying.
