Comcast continues its expansion in Berks County

Comcast is continuing to expand its network in Berks County, with plans to add an additional 2,000 residents and businesses in Birdsboro. Work is already underway for this latest expansion, the company said, and will continue throughout 2024.

“We are committed to investing in and expanding our network to ensure that more residents and businesses in Pennsylvania have the connectivity they need to succeed,” Dan Bonelli, senior vice president of Comcast’s Freedom Region — which serves Berks and other areas of Southeastern Pennsylvania — said in a statement. “We are proud to provide more Berks County residents with fast, secure and reliable Internet services that are built to meet the community’s needs today and into the future.”

Underground work started in Birdsboro in mid-2023. Several hundred customers already have access to Comcast’s products and services, and serviceable addresses will be added as the project continues, the company said. Part of the project includes working with local energy providers to secure pole permits needed to complete the project.

This is the latest expansion for Comcast, which has been expanding its Xfinity 10G Network in Berks and Chester counties. In Amity and Exeter townships and St. Lawrence, recent projects resulted in the addition of about 13,000 customers, according to information Comcast had previously provided to MediaNews Group. Similarly, Comcast has added customers in Honey Brook and Elverson.

Comcast serves about 58 municipalities in Berks, as well as most of Montgomery and Chester counties.

Comcast did not detail specific areas that are included. However, residents and businesses can visit Xfinity.com/MyTown/ and enter their address for additional details on construction timing and service availability, the company said. They can also visit the Comcast Xfinity Store in Pottstown, 310 Upland Square Dr.; or the Xfinity Store in Spring Township, 2777 Papermill Road to check on service availability.

Once service is available, residents will have access to Xfinity’s full suite of Internet products, including the company’s Internet Essentials program that provides low-cost, high-speed broadband for income constrained households. For local businesses, Comcast Business offers a suite of connectivity, communications, networking, cybersecurity, wireless and managed solutions to help organizations of different sizes.

The expansion is part of Comcast’s latest investments in Pennsylvania. In the last several years, Comcast has expanded its Xfinity 10G Network to reach more than 315,000 additional homes and businesses throughout the state.

Since 2020, Comcast has provided more than $144 million in cash and in-kind contributions to support organizations across Pennsylvania. The company has also installed 190 Lift Zones in the state, providing free Wi-Fi service to help these community centers promote digital learning. Lift Zones are part of Project UP.
