Community sing brings taste of South Africa to Berks

The South African performance troupe Thula Sizwe led a day of learning and music Saturday in collaboration with Berks Youth Chorus.

The group appeared at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Shillington, brining the songs and dances of Zulu culture to Berks County.

The daylong program included a workshop for music educators, a community sing and a full-length Thula Sizwe concert.

Hailing from Soshanguve, South Africa, Thula Sizwe is a group of vocalists and dancers who keep the musical traditions of Zulu warriors alive on the world stage.

Berks Youth Chorus brought in the group in a collaboration with Pittsburgh Youth Chorus and the Bach Choir of Bethlehem.

Thula Sizwe’s regional tour also includes stops in Pittsburgh, Williamsport and Lewisburg along with Trenton and Princeton, N.J.
