SOUTH COVENTRY — The resignation of Owen J. Roberts School Board member Daniel Dougherty was announced at the Monday, Jan. 22, board meeting.
Dougherty was first elected in 2021 and his resignation will take effect on Jan. 31. No reason was given publicly for his resignation.
Those interested in being appointed to replace him must apply by the end of business at 4 p.m. on Feb. 1.
Anyone who would like to apply must only be at least 18 years old, of “good moral character” and have been a resident of the school district for at least one year.
Additionally, no one who has been removed from “any office of trust under federal, state or local laws for any malfeasance in such office,” according to a legal advertisement published by the school district in Tuesday’s Mercury. Also, applicants cannot be employed by the school district, have a business transaction with the district or receive pay for services from the district.
The school board intends to publicly interview those who have applied to fill the seat at the Feb. 5 work session at around 7:30 p.m. and the vote to appoint Dougherty’s replacement will likely happen at the Feb. 26 meeting.
Dougherty, who did not attend Monday’s meeting “will be missed,” said board member April Saboe. “He was a good board member.”
“He was very introspective and he really appreciated how important the work was,” said board member Nicholas Rotoli.
“It was clear that he always put the children first,” said School Board Vice President John Melniczek
School Board President Rita Pederson said Dougherty will be missed “for his diligence in doing the work. We wish him the best in her new endeavors.”
