District 3 baseball: Grim, VanOstenbridge, Hilburt hurl gems; Kutztown knocks off top seed

Ethan Grim threw a complete game shutout, striking out 12, and Bryce Detwiler hit a two-run home run to lead top-seeded Gov. Mifflin to a 3-0 win over ninth-seeded Palmyra in the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 5A baseball tournament on Monday.

In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Aden Reiter drew a walk.

After Nick Montgomery came in as a pinch runner, Detwiler hit his blast to put Mifflin up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Grim, who also tripled in the game, led off with a walk and Ryan Lehman courtesy ran for him.

Pinch-hitter Nate Radwanski sacrifice bunted him over to second.  After Matt Koehler flew out, Lehman advanced to third on a passed ball and then Reese Hohl was hit by a pitch.

During the next batter, Hohl walked off first to draw a throw and Lehman stole home to make it 3-0.

Braeden Sommers was 2 for 3 with a double for Palmyra.

Palmyra starting pitcher Logan Kriner went 5 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.

• Winning pitcher Matt VanOstenbridge tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead No. 4 Wilson to a 4-1 Class 6A victory over No. 5 Manheim Township in the quarterfinals on Monday.

The Bulldogs, 14-6 and seeking their third district title since 2019, play the winner of top-seeded Cedar Cliff and No. 9 Ephrata on Thursday in the semifinals.

VanOstenbridge, a Penn State recruit, struck out 10 and allowed just one earned run.

Tommy Hunsicker, Jack Gabel and CJ Fernandez droves in runs for Wilson.

• Winning pitcher Liam Hilburt pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out nine, to lead sixth-seeded Fleetwood to a 3-0 quarterfinal victory in Class 4A over third-seeded Northern Lebanon on Monday.

Fleetwood (13-7) plays  in the quarterfinals. Northern Lebanon finishes the season 18-3.

Fleetwood plays in the semifinals on Thursday against the winner of No. 2 East Pennsboro and No. 10 Bishop McDevitt.

Dalton Young doubled and knocked in two runs for Fleetwood.

• In Class 2A, defending champion Kutztown, the fourth seed, knocked off top-seed Halifax 7-3 on Monday in the semifinals.

Kutztown (12-9) advanced to Thursday’s championship game against Delone Catholic at 6:30 p.m. at Wenger Field in Fredericksburg.

Delone Catholic, 13-7 and the second seed, defeated Newport 5-1 on Monday.

Kutztown beat Halifax last year in the championship game.

• James Bell knocked in four runs to lead fourth-seeded James Buchanan to a 10-8 victory over No. 5 Berks Catholic in a Class 4A quarterfinal game in the District 3 baseball playoffs.

James Buchanan (14-6) plays Thursday in the semifinals against the winner of today’s game between top-seed Bermudian Springs and No. 8 ELCO.

For Berks Catholic, which finishes the season 16-4, Trey Stricker and Dennys Rodriguez each doubled, singled and knocked in two runs. Michael Bradley also doubled for the Saints.

• Ty Book struck out seven and allowed just two runs as Trinity eliminated Oley Valley from the Class 3A District 3 playoffs Monday in the quarterfinals.

Trinity is the second seed in the tournament and is now 14-7. Seventh-seeded Oley Valley finishes the season 11-8.

Book pitched 6.2 innings and gave up the two runs in the fourth inning when Oley Valley’s Luke Peterson knocked in a run.

For Trinity, Ryan Balaban went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and 3 RBI.

For Oley Valley, Sean Hoffman doubled.

• Jager Nailor, Jeff Lougee and Landon Mark each knocked in two runs to lead Mechanicsburg to a 9-6 victory over Muhlenberg in the Class 5A quarterfinals on Monday.

The seventh-seeded Muhls finish the season 14-7.

Second-seeded Mechanicsburg (17-3-1) plays the winner of the Lower Dauphin-Shippensburg game.

Aaden Lopez homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Muhls.
