Jacob Franek kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give Exeter a dramatic 24-21 victory over top-seeded and unbeaten New Oxford in the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 5A playoffs on Friday night.
Exeter, the eighth seed, gets to play another unbeaten team in the semifinals on Friday in Conestoga Valley (11-0).
Conestoga Valley, a 35-24 winner over Shippensburg on Friday night, beat Exeter 28-27 on Oct. 18 and went on to win the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 title.
After Clayton Nieves scored on a two-yard run early in the second quarter, Exeter took a 14-7 halftime lead on two Jacob Hafer to Carter Redding touchdown passes.
The first one was for 68 yards and Franek’s PAT tied the game.
The second scoring strike was for 57 yards and again Franek made the PAT.
Nieves scored on a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 14.
The Eagles regained the lead on Genuine Stutzman’s two-yard TD run and Franek’s PAT.
New Oxford quarterback Luke Frey hit Brayden Billman with a 21-yard scoring pass and the game was tied at 21, setting up Franek’s game-winning kick.
Hafer completed 4 of 9 passes for 143 yards and the two touchdowns.
Exeter running back Jayden Zandier gained 147 yards on 27 carries.
Redding caught three passes for 130 yards and the two touchdowns.
