DLN Roundup: WCU drops second in a row at Shepherd

Shepherd quarterback Malik Hardyway’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Malakai Brown midway through the fourth quarter lifted Shepherd to a 28–24 win over visiting West Chester on Saturday afternoon at Ram Stadium.

West Chester (1-2 in PSAC East, 3-3 overall) yielded 328 total yards of offense to Shepherd (2-1, 2-4) and couldn’t hold on after taking a 24–21 lead early in the fourth. Backup quarterback Collin O’Sullivan connected with Thatcher Miller for a nine-yard touchdown to put the Golden Rams ahead, before Shepherd responded with its decisive 85-yard drive.

Starting quarterback Ethan Kohler and running back Khalil Owens each ran for short touchdowns for WCU, while placekicker Ryan Zuk added a 22-yard field goal.

Owens finished with 53 rushing yards, and 62 all-purpose yards. Defensively, Gus Ross (Bishop Shanahan), Jimmy Wright and Connor Noble (Downingtown East) each paced West Chester with seven tackles apiece; Noble added a forced fumble and an interception while Wright a pass breakup.

O’Sullivan finished the day 13-for-25 with an interception and a touchdown. He threw for 106 yards in his first college action. Kohler was 7 of 18 for 56 yards. He was sacked four times.

West Chester heads to Lock Haven next Saturday for another PSAC East showdown with the Bald Eagles.

Volleyball

West Chester 3, Lock Haven – Zoe Haines had 15 kills, including the match-winner to help lead WCU (4-1 in PSAC East, 14-3 overall to a 20-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11 victory over the Eagles (2-3, 4-12) on Saturday afternoon. Abiah Lane added 12 kills  and CeCe Isenberg added 10 kills and six blocks. Lacie Brown (Avon Grove) led West Chester in aces (five), assists (47), and digs (12), while Elianna Freeman had 11 digs.

Women’s Soccer

West Chester 8, Mansfield 0 – Kate Alexander scored two goals and was one of six Golden Rams to find the back of the net on Saturday as WCU (7-1-3) cruised past the winless Mountaineers. Victoria Pungello scored the first goal of the game just over four minutes in off an assist from Jacqueline Graham. Lauren Reimold (Downingtown East) added a goal of her own in the 22nd minute before Kate Alexander scored a goal of her own in the 30th minute to give the Rams a commanding 4-0 lead.

Field Hockey

Immaculata 1, Wooster 0 – The Mighty Macs blanked the College of Wooster at Draper Walsh Stadium in non-league action. Gabriella O’Brien scored the lone goal of the match in the second quarter, with Jillian Vandenbraak providing the assist. Mackenzie Schrack was stellar in goal, recording eight saves to secure the shutout.

Volleyball

Unionville 3, Avon Grove 0 – Set scores were 25-16, 25-12, and 25-11. The Longhorns (13-0 overall) were led by Holland Van Deusen with 28 assists and seven kills, Stalena Van Deusen with 13 kills, and Leah Wiswall with six kills.
