Driver dies after 2-vehicle accident in southern Berks

A Sinking Spring man was fatally injured in a crash on Interstate 176 in Caernarvon Township.

Clayton B. Schannauer, 27, died October 26 at 11:27 p.m. in Reading Hospital, acting Berks County Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach said.

The cause of death was chest and abdominal injuries, Hollenbach said. The deaths was ruled an accident.

Schannauer is the 30th person to die in 2021 in crashes on Berks roads.

The crash occurred October 25 about 2:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes about 2 miles north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange, state police said.

Troopers gave this account:

Schannauer was in the right lane in a pickup truck and his truck hit the back of dump truck loaded with asphalt.

The pickup truck was wedged under the rear of the dump truck. The dump truck driver, Ismael Melendez-Vega, 65, Norristown, pulled off the highway onto the shoulder, dragging Schannauer’s pickup there as well.

Schannauer was transported to Reading Hospital and died the next day. Melendez-Vega was not injured.

Both drivers wore seat belts.
