Eagles Notebook: New nickel Bradley Roby wants to be part of a winner in Philly

PHILADELPHIA — Literally minutes before the FEMA-FCC mobile test lit up all the cell phones in the Eagles’ locker room Wednesday, the team’s newest addition, 31-year-old cornerback Bradley Roby revealed his mission.

“I really wanted to win a championship,” siad Roby, who joined the practice squad. “Got one in my career. I’ve been thirsty to get back and I was really only considering teams I thought could make it to the Super Bowl.”

The Eagles reached the Super Bowl last February and have a fairly good shot at getting there again judging by their 4-0 start.

But the Eagles are dreadfully thin at cornerback, thanks to the ripple effect of losing nickel corner Avonte Maddox to a torn pectoral muscle.

Veteran James Bradberry played a lot of nickel in a back-and-forth skirmish with the Commanders, who knotted the game with two seconds left on Sam Howell’s second touchdown pass before NFC special teams player of the week Jake Elliott ended the upset bid with a 54-yard field goal in overtime.

Roby knows the nickel position, and that should help.

“I’m glad we brought in some extra guys because we’re down an important guy in Avonte,” Bradberry said. “We can use as much help as you can get as far as depth. Roby is great. So, we’re going to see how they mix him into the game plan.”

Roby is an offseason workout buddy of Eagles veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who gave him a seal of approval.

“I told him anything you need, I can help you with it,” Slay said. “He’s a great addition, a veteran that can play outside and nickel. We’ll see what he can bring as a team.”

A 2014 first-round pick of the Broncos, Roby played 41 snaps and broke up three Cam Newton passes in the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers in just his second season.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t rule out Roby making an almost immediate impact. Roby figures he’s been around long enough to figure out how to fit in.

“”I don’t think it will take too long,” Roby said. “When you’ve played so long I mean it’s really learning certain coverages you’re going to run. Just the small minute details. I don’t think it will take me too long to get ready.”
