Exeter Township Fire Department members took about two dozen children on a holiday shopping trip to Boscov’s.
The department’s annual Shop with a Firefighter program started at the Reiffton station at 6 p.m. Tuesday. From there, the children boarded fire engines that transported them to the Boscov’s store in Exeter.
The youngsters live in Exeter and were referred to the program by the Exeter School District, said Dan Miller, the fire department’s public information officer. They were selected because their families could use a boost this Christmas season for various reasons.
Firefighters were paired with the children who were given gift cards to buy Christmas gifts for family members.
Santa Claus also took time out of his busy schedule to talk to the children if they chose.
The firefighters enjoy the event because it’s a rare opportunity for them to interact with community members in a non-emergency situation.
“This is one of the events our members look forward to all year,” Deputy Fire Chief Chris Jordan said. “It is an opportunity to get out and interact with the public in a positive light.”
