Gov. Mifflin girls basketball team tops Twin Valley behind 3-point shooting [updated]

Gov. Mifflin used 3-point shooting to beat Twin Valley on Tuesday night.

Led by four 3-pointers from sophomore Taylor Koenig, the Mustangs made seven field goals from beyond the arc in a 47-33 win over the Raiders in a Berks Girls Basketball League Division I-II game at Shillington.

“I thought they did very well,” Gov. Mifflin coach Mike Clark said about his team. “We’re making 3s.”

Thanks in large part to her efficient outside shooting, Koenig led all scorers with 20 points. Tuesday’s game marked the second time in her young career that she has scored at least 20 points.

“She’s great,” Clark said. “She’s got the size, she’s got the step-back (jump shot).”

Koenig has scored in double figures in 11 of her last 14 games. She leads the Mustangs with 38 3-pointers made this season.

“She’s got it all,” Clark said. “I like Taylor’s game.”

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, as Twin Valley led 8-4 after one quarter of play. Senior Anna Kaplan led the Raiders with six points in the first quarter.

Gov. Mifflin (7-3 Berks I, 13-7) dominated the second quarter on both ends of the floor, outscoring Twin Valley 20-5. The Mustangs led 24-13 at the half.

“We were never in-sync offensively and defensively,” Clark said. “I thought we did what we needed to do.”

The Raiders (6-3 Berks II, 12-6) began the third quarter with an 11-2 run, cutting Gov. Mifflin’s lead to just two points. Natali Foster led Twin Valley with seven points in the third quarter and 12 overall.

“We were flat again,” Clark said. “We let them back in the game.”

However, the Mustangs never relinquished the lead, hitting several crucial shots late in the third quarter and early fourth quarter to seal the win. Gov. Mifflin finished the game on a 21-9 run.

“We all hit shots when we needed to hit shots,” Koenig said. “It was a really good team win. I was really proud of all of us.”

Prior to the “senior night” game, the Mustangs honored their three seniors: Johanna Dindas, Shyanna Mayo and Elisa Fiore. Mayo led the senior class with six points.

“I love them,” Clark said. “I’m gonna hate losing these three seniors.”
