Gov. Mifflin opened league play on Thursday night, and picked up right where it left off.
The defending champions of Division I of the Berks Girls Basketball League defeated division foe Wilson 54-46 in West Lawn. The Mustangs (3-1) held off a late surge from the Bulldogs (1-2), who trailed by only six with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter.
“It’s always going to come down to strategy,” Gov. Mifflin coach Michael Clark said. “I thought the girls played well down the stretch.”
The Mustangs jumped to a 17-5 lead through one quarter and remained in front the rest of the way. Gov. Mifflin led 31-19 at the half.
“(In the) first half we shot the ball very well,” Clark said.
Wilson outscored the Mustangs 27-23 in the second half, and trailed by only four with 18 seconds remaining. However, Gov. Mifflin made several free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
“We threw the ball away too much in the second half,” Clark said. “That part I did not like.”
Gov. Mifflin was dominant from beyond the arc, converting 10 3-pointers. Three Mustangs scored in double figures.
“I’m starting five guards, so I basically got to spread the floor,” Clark said. “We shoot the ball very well.”
Senior Shyanna Mayo led the way with 12 points, all of which came from beyond the arc. Junior Shakyla Mayo had 11 points while junior Anyah Ortiz had 10 points.
For Wilson, senior Amiyah Nguyen scored 16 points. Three different Bulldogs scored eight points.
