After a remarkable 40-year career in parks and recreation, Karen Schreiber, Muhlenberg Township’s Director of Parks and Recreation, is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, community engagement, and passion. For 23 years, Karen has been at the heart of the township’s parks and programs, shaping them into a vibrant cornerstone of local life.
Karen’s impact is evident in programs like RiverFest, which began as a modest event at Jim Dietrich Park and now attracts over 22,000 visitors annually. She also spearheaded unique activities such as the Adult Egg Hunt in the Dark, Mother-Son Fortnite Bingo, and the Father-Daughter Dance. These initiatives earned the department numerous accolades, including multiple Excellence in Programming awards.
Her crowning achievement this year was receiving the Fred Coombs Outstanding Achievement Award, the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society’s highest honor.
Reflecting on her career, Karen noted how parks and recreation have evolved. “Safety has become paramount, and the world is much more litigious,” she shared. Yet, her unwavering passion for her work shone through. “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life,” she said.
As she steps into retirement, Karen leaves behind a parks department that embodies joy, connection, and community spirit. Her contributions, from events like Spring Fiesta to Haunted Hollow hayrides, have enriched countless lives in Muhlenberg Township.
Thank you, Karen, for your service and commitment. Your legacy will inspire generations to come.
