Hopewell Furnace seeks support for feeding animals

Friends of Hopewell Furnace is seeking donations to support its efforts to ensure the feeding and care of animals at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site.

The federal government has frozen National Park Service purchasing authority, and help is needed to get what’s needed to care for the sheep and red Devon steers on the site’s farm, according to Edie Shean-Hammond, a former superintendent at the Union Township property.

Shean-Hammond put out a plea for donations on behalf of the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, which has established a Farm Animal Fund to pay for the animals’ basic needs. She said the group has received a challenge grant from a donor willing to match every dollar given with $4.

To donate, visit www.friendsofhopewellfurn.org/. and scroll down to the Pay Pal link at the bottom of the page. To donate by check, make it out to Friends of Hopewell Furnace NHS, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, PA 19520 and note “Farm Animal Fund” on the memo line.
