Humane Pennsylvania is asking for donations of pet food to help support its pet-food pantry and emergency response team.
The animal welfare center operates Spike’s Pet Food Pantry and shelters in Reading and Lancaster.
Its pantry and response team provides relief in response to disasters and emergencies impacting animals in Berks and Lancaster counties.
In response to last week’s catastrophic flooding, Humane PA joined forces with other state and local agencies to serve area residents and their pets in need, the organization announced.
Pet food and other pet supplies were distributed to households affected by the flooding.
“These efforts ensure that pets and caretakers stay together, even in emergency disaster situations,” Humane PA spokeswoman Maggie McDevitt said, “and prevents caretakers from having to surrender their pet to a shelter during times of hardship.”
The center also provided several pallets of pet supplies to the Greater Pennsylvania American Red Cross over the last few months, she said.
The pallets were laden with pet food, cages, blankets, litter boxes and other supplies aimed at aiding pet caretakers during emergencies.
Because of the recent flood relief efforts, the organization’s supply of pet food is dangerously low, McDevitt said.
Donations of unopened wet and dry dog and cat food can be made at Humane’s Freedom Center, 1801 N. 11th St., or ordered online and sent directly to the center.
“Any support is greatly appreciated,” McDevitt said.
