Kutztown loses shootout to Annville-Cleona in high school football

After responding all night, Kutztown wasn’t unable to do it one final time in a 41-40 loss to Annville-Cleona in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 game Friday at Annville.

The Dutchmen (2-1, 4-2) took the lead on a 7-yard run by Bryce Keller and Mina Elzek’s PAT kick with 4:41 left.

The Cougars (1-2, 2-4) then drove to Annville 17, but Cael Harter made a diving tackle of Mason Sherry on fourth-and-3.

Annville ran for 377 yards on 49 carries, while Kutztown ran for 303 yards on 45 carries.

The Dutchmen took a 7-0 lead on a 45-yard run by Cam Connelly. The Cougars answered with a 43-yard run by quarterback Colten Mathias, but the two-point conversion pass failed.

Annville made it 13-7 on a 25-yard run by Bryce Keller. Kutztown tied it on Sherry’s 82-yard return of a fumble and Mathias’ two-point conversion run.

Connelly’s 25-yard run gave the Dutchmen a 20-13 lead before Mathias threw an 8-yard pass to James Undercuffler to tie it.

Annville scored on a 3-yard run by Keller with 33 seconds left in the first half, but Kutztown came right back to score on a 59-yard pass from Mathias to Ethan Lafferty with 16 seconds left. The Cougars’ trailed 27-26 at the half after the two-point conversion run failed.

Sherry gave Kutztown its first lead on a 9-yard run. Brenden Ackley’s two-point conversion run made it 34-27.

Cam Connelly scored his third touchdown, this one on a 25-yard run, to tie it a 34-34.

Ackley’s 24-yard run put the Cougars back in front, but their two-point conversion run failed, making it 40-34.

Ackley finished with 150 yards rushing on 24 carries. Sherry had 90 yards on 15 carries. Mathias completed 2-of-3 passes for 67 yards.
