The Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc., Reading Hospital, and Co-County Wellness joined forces to host the second annual Let’s Talk, Period on Saturday, March 8, at Reading Hospital School of Life Sciences Building.
Up from last year, approximately 125 children and adults attended this year’s event. Lively discussion and education were provided during the hour-long panel discussion.
The featured panelists included:
- Dr. Olubunmi Ojikutu, M.D. – Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Tower Health
- Dr. Laila Muallem, M.D. – Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Dr. Karen Wang, M.D. – Chief Medical Officer at Berks Community Health Center
This program was a judgment-free and stigma-smashing event that brought together medical professionals for an honest and meaningful conversation, providing accurate information around puberty and menstrual cycles.
The target audience for this free event was children who are going to get their period or are already experiencing their period, and a trusted adult or chaperone. It was meant to empower and build self-confidence through increased knowledge, strategies, and resources while entering the next phase of womanhood.
Following the discussion, a question-and-answer session was held addressing questions from the audience. Free goodie bags including menstrual products, printed materials about periods and the changing body, and personal care items were distributed. Goody bag items were donated by: Reading Hospital, Redner’s, Comfort Keepers – Berks County, Godiva Chocolatier, Kimberton Whole Foods, Giant Food Store, Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery, and Lisa’s Salon and Spa. Snacks and drinks were also provided courtesy of Reading Hospital.
