Letter: Americans must focus on shared values after election

Now that the election is over, some of us are elated, others deeply disappointed, and many just glad it is over. The level of anger among citizens on all sides was appalling as was a feeling that those with a different opinion were bad people.

It is my fervent hope that we can all recognize how many values we share as Americans, and how most of us are good people, although we all have our flaws.

I encourage those of all beliefs to continue to strive (the word “fight” is too often used) for the America that reflects our highest values but in a way that respects others of different beliefs.

Flawed though we are, our country remains a democracy. Let’s all continue that “great American experiment,” respecting each other, recognizing that life goes on and that both during and between elections there are voices that need to be heard to encourage our leaders to reach for our highest ideals and not our basest instincts.

I commend all who voted and participated, whether or not I agree with your opinion.
