Letter: Berks lawmaker wrong to criticize county agency

Editor:

State Rep. David Maloney recently accused the Berks County Nonprofit Development Corp. of improperly being in the landlord business. To clarify that agency’s mission: It was formed under Pennsylvania’s Urban Redevelopment Law of 1945. Its mission is to promote economic development in Berks.

The organization works in partnership with the Berks County Redevelopment Authority, which is focused on efforts such as building offices to be leased for county operations, developing low-income rental housing, enhancing tourist rail services and developing an emergncy shelter for homeless families. The use of government authorities for such purposes is not unique to Berks County. It is encouraged by state law.

So Maloney, in essence, is bashing the General Assembly where he works. The irony is stunning. It’s time for Berks County legislators to push to censure Maloney for the benefit of their constituents.

House Republicans have an office called “District Ops” which is, in essence, a “babysitting service” for legislators. Some may see it as a spy service for so-called leadership. In short, it’s a colossal waste of public money as there is no benefit to taxpayers.
