Letter: Reflections after getting another property tax bill

Editor:

I got another property tax bill.

Gov. Josh Shapiro wants people who are well able to pay their property taxes to get a property tax rebate.

People unable to pay destructive property taxes don’t qualify for the rebate because they don’t have property tax receipts marked “paid” to include with the applications. They are among the many people whose homes are listed for tax sale.

If the people running our state government cared, they would abolish property taxes and fund the schools with a state sales tax, as proposed long ago by Rep. Sam Rohrer. His proposal was ignored by the Legislature.

The state should consider having Pennsylvania casinos put one-third of every wager into a sales tax account reserved for school funding.

Making each county one school district would reduce the cost of schools; while privatizing alcohol sales would make much more money available for education.
