Ukraine is a peaceful democracy that has done nothing to deserve the unremitting savagery and destruction of life and property at the hands of Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin. Traditional means of influence (sanctions, negotiations, small-scale, defensive weaponry) do not faze him. Like any bully or thug, all he understands is the use of countervailing force to thwart his efforts at conquest.
Ukrainian troops need the planes, tanks and artillery necessary to retake their sovereign territory (including Crimea and the Donbas region) so that they can be made whole again prior to any treaty. Guarantees from NATO for their defense going forward are also necessary. That’s the least they deserve, along with reparations and war crimes trials for genocide, for all they have suffered.
