In one sense, the Dec. 26 letter about the Jan. 6 committee is correct (“Jan. 6 committee offers no surprises in the end”). It’s no surprise that Donald Trump, the single most corrupt president the United States has ever had the misfortune to elect, tried to hang onto power after he lost the 2020 presidential election. It’s no surprise that he tried to strong-arm Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” him votes. It’s no surprise that he hatched a scheme to put forth a fake set of electors. It’s no surprise that he summoned a mob to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. It’s no surprise that he was quite content with the crazed crowd crowing, “Hang Mike Pence!” What is a surprise is that nearly everyone who testified was a Republican. From Raffensperger to former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to ex-White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Republican testimony took center stage.
The idea that the Jan. 6 committee was a partisan hit job is preposterous, but not nearly as preposterous as continuing to back an ex-president who would trade democracy for tyranny.
