Longtime Berks law enforcement official sworn in as sheriff

A familiar face will be taking over as sheriff of Berks County.

Longtime department employee Mandy Miller was officially sworn in as acting sheriff Monday. She has worked in the office since 1999, most recently serving as chief deputy.

Miller takes over for Eric Weaknecht, who won election in November to serve as the representative for the 5th Legislative District. Weaknecht had been sheriff since 2008, winning reelection just last year.

Because of Weaknecht’s departure, the position will appear on the ballot in 2025.

The appointment of Miller to sheriff makes her the first woman to serve in that post in the history of the county.

Miller said she is committed to public safety, government efficiency and community engagement.

A Wilson High School alumna, she is also a graduate of the Reading Police Academy and the Pennsylvania Sheriff Academy. She is  on track to complete a degree in business this year, which she believes will enhance her leadership skills.
