New lights coming to Schuylkill Haven’s Island

Schuylkill Haven’s Island Committee will be getting four new lights donated to help illuminate the parking and grassy area near the baseball fields. At its Feb. 7 meeting, borough council approved providing government help to install the equipment.

In other business, council approved spending $174,772 to purchase a 2025 Wester Star 47X dump truck and upfitting  for the water and sewer department. The current truck is over 25 years old, and officials said it wouldn’t pass inspection again without major repairs. The borough expects to receive the new truck next year.

Council approved a standard agreement and resolution related to the ongoing Columbia Street project stating that the borough takes responsibility for maintaining the sidewalks along the bridge.

Council approved the Schuylkill River Sojourn to be held June 14-21. The launch and advance celebrations will be held on the 14th and 15th at the Island. Schuylkill River Greenways are in talks with PennDOT regarding the launch point due to the bridge project, but organiers are hoping nevertheless to launch from the Island.

A date for the borough spring electronics recycling event is being explored by town officials, but nothing has yet been set.

A date for the Corvette car show at Bubeck Park was set for Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Schuylkill Hose was approved to hold two boot drives on Parkway on March 30 and Sept. 14.

During public comment, a North Berne Street resident complained of speeding along the roadway and requested more police presence in the area.

Mayor Michael Devlin said that if the weather this winter would get colder and the water at Bubeck Park were to freeze, he would look into holding a skating party, but with the mild weather of late, it might not happen.
