Oley Valley American Legion honors veterans in observance of Memorial Day

The Oley Valley American Legion Post #878 hosted two events in observance of Memorial Day on Sunday, May 25.

The Legion Post held 21-gun salutes at the cemeteries of Oley Grace Church, St. Paul’s Lobachsville, Pleasantville, Oley Spangsville Church, Oley Line and Spies Church.

During a Memorial Day ceremony at Friedens Cemetery on May 25, Oley Legion member John Henschel spoke of his time serving in the Air Force in Vietnam as security with working dogs. He currently is involved in raising money for a new memorial in Reading City Park to recognize military working dogs and to those who lost their life to Agent Orange after their tour of duty in Vietnam. At 6 p.m., the Legion hosted a parade starting at the Oley Valley Area High School, going up Main Street to the Friedens Church Cemetery where there was a religious service, guest speaker, and a 21-gun salute honoring the veterans at that cemetery.

The guest speaker was John Henschel, an Air Force Police K-9 dog handler from 1966-1970.  He is retired from Graterford Prison as corrections officer and vocational employment coordinator.
