Opportunity House has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing family homelessness in Berks County. The program, Supporting Transitions Through Empowerment and Progression, called STEP, combines transitional housing with rapid rehousing to help parents and children move from homelessness to permanent, stable housing.
Funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), STEP is designed to provide short-term housing and intensive support services for families experiencing homelessness. The program has 18 beds, serving parents with at least one child. Participants can stay for up to 24 months, though most are expected to transition to permanent housing much sooner.
“STEP provides more than just shelter,” said Alyssa Bushkie, CEO of Opportunity House. “It offers families the time, space, and support they need to rebuild their lives and work toward lasting housing stability.”
Each family enrolled in the STEP program will work closely with their dedicated case manager to set and achieve personal goals related to housing, employment, education, and overall well-being. The program also connects families with community resources, such as healthcare services, job training, and budgeting.
“Transitional housing allows families to take a breath, stabilize, and begin preparing for long-term success,” said Alyssa Bushkie. “Our goal is to empower each parent to make progress toward independence while ensuring their children have a safe, supportive environment.” Currently, 25 individuals are in the program — all seeking a path toward permanent housing.
The location of the STEP facility is being kept confidential to protect the privacy of its residents. It serves as an essential part of Opportunity House’s broader mission to reduce homelessness across the county.
