Penn State QB Drew Allar will miss rest of season with injury, James Franklin says

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State quarterback Drew Allar will miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury late in the fourth quarter of a 22-21 loss to Northwestern Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

Allar scrambled and picked up 1 yard on third-and-4 from the Nittany Lions’ 31. He immediately grabbed his left ankle and was later carted off the field.

“Drew will be done for the year,” Penn State coach James Franklin said right after he received the OK from Allar’s family to relay the news. “I do not release that information until I clear it with the kid and the family. I talked to Drew and had not heard back from the family before I came in here.”

Allar completed 13-of-20 passes for 137 yards and carried six times for 25 yards. He also threw a first-quarter interception on a pass to Liam Clifford in the end zone.

“Oh, OK, I didn’t know that,” defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton said about Allar’s injury. “That’s unfortunate. I have belief in Grunk.”

Redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer replaced Allar and was stopped short of the chains on fourth down on Penn State’s final possession.

Grunkemeyer has completed 9-of-13 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown in his career.

“Since Day 1, I’ve always been a fan of Grunk,” Dennis-Sutton said. “He’s a tough guy and not scared of anything. He’s always getting ready. I always see him in the building, preparing like he’s a starter. That’s why I have faith in him.”

A three-year starter, Allar finished his Penn State career with 7,402 passing yards (fourth in school history) and 61 touchdown passes (third).
