PIAA 4A boys basketball: Berks Catholic marches on with 51-47 win

Zach Suski and Kingston McKoy each scored 16 points to lead Berks Catholic to a 51-47 win over Scranton Prep in the second round of the PIAA Class 4A boys basketball tournament on Tuesday at Hazleton Area High School.

The Saints advance to play the winner of Belle Vernon and Sharon in the quarterfinals on Friday at a time and site to be determined.

Berks Catholic trailed by two points entering the final period, but outscored Scranton Prep 14-8 in the final period, as Suski scored five points and McKoy four.

The Saints (22-4) led 12-10 after the first quarter as Suski scored seven points and McKoy five.

In the second quarter, Prep (19-8) limited the Saints to just five points and took a 23-17 lead as Packy Doherty scored six points on two 3-pointers and Brycen Martin scored five points.

Berks Catholic’s Bryce Gumby scored 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter as the Saints closed to 39-37 with one quarter to play.

Berks Catholic advanced to Tuesday’s second round by beating Simon Gratz 61-36 in the first round.
