These are arguably the top 10 Penn State plays of this season going into the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Boise State Tuesday night in the Fiesta Bowl:
10: Tyler Warren’s TD run at Purdue: The Nittany Lions tight end had already scored three rushing touchdowns before he showed off his speed and vision on a 48-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter of a 49-10 win against the Boilermakers.
9. Zion Tracy’s interception vs. Ohio State: Tracy, a sophomore cornerback, jumped a route, intercepted Will Howard’s pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of a 20-13 loss to the Buckeyes.
8. Tyler Warren’s catch vs. Ohio State: Warren made one of the best catches of the season when he battled Buckeyes safety Lathan Ransom along the Buckeyes sideline for a 31-yard gain in the fourth quarter.
7. Dominic DeLuca’s interception vs. SMU: DeLuca, a junior linebacker, stepped up after the Penn State offense had struggled on its first two series. His 23-yard return gave the Lions a 7-0 lead and allowed their fans to breathe easier on the way to a 38-10 win.
6. Jaylen Reed’s interception at Wisconsin: Penn State trailed 13-10 in the middle of the third quarter before Reed, a senior safety, made a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown and sent the Lions to a 28-13 victory.
5. Ryan Barker’s game-winner at USC: Barker, a walk-on, was in his second game as the regular kicker when he booted four field goals, including a 36-yarder in overtime to lift Penn State over the Trojans 33-30.
4. Jaylen Reed’s interception at USC: The Trojans were driving for a go-ahead score and had third-and-6 at the Penn State 45 with 14 seconds left in regulation. Reed intercepted Miller Moss’ pass to force overtime and help the Lions win.
3. Drew Allar’s fourth-down pass at USC: Allar already had completed one fourth-down pass to Julian Fleming on the drive when he escaped the Trojans’ pass rush and hit Fleming on fourth-and-10 for a 16-yard gain. Two plays later, Allar found Nick Singleton for a 14-yard TD and a tie with 2:53 to go in regulation.
2. Penn State’s fake punt at Minnesota: With Penn State holding a one-point lead and facing fourth-and-1 from its 34 late in the fourth quarter, James Franklin surprised the Golden Gophers with a fake punt. Freshman tight end Luke Reynolds took the snap and rambled 32 yards, helping the Lions hold on for a 26-25 win.
1. Tyler Warren’s TD catch at USC: Penn State trailed 20-6 early in the third quarter and had a first down at the Trojans’ 32. Warren lined up at center and was an eligible receiver in an unbalanced formation. He snapped the ball to Beau Pribula, who threw back to Allar near the sideline. Allar lobbed a strike to Warren, who made the catch in the end zone despite a defender draped over him.
