Reading Area Community College teams up with 2 other schools to offer a new degree

Reading Area Community College is partnering with a pair of other community colleges to offer students a new opportunity.

RACC, Lehigh Carbon Community College and Northampton Community College are joining forces to give students a chance to earn an associates degree in histotechnology.

Histotechnology is a science centering on the microscopic detection of tissue abnormalities for disease diagnosis and the treatment of diseases.

“Histotechnicians play a critical role in the health care arena as they are skilled professionals in a laboratory setting,” Alayne Fessler, RACC professor and program director of medical laboratory technician and histotechnician programs, said in a statement announcing the partnership. “The future for employment is excellent, and there is a critical need for well-trained histotechnicians locally, as well as throughout the country.”

As part of the partnership, students will enroll in the histotechnician program at the local community college to complete their preclinical general education requirements, then finish the program at RACC. While at RACC, students will pay Berks County resident tuition rates.

That final portion of the program consists of online courses and three in-person practicums at clinical sites in Berks and surrounding counties.
