One night after sustaining its first Berks Conference loss, Reading High responded with an 89-55 blowout win over Division I rival Wilson Wednesday night at Geigle Complex.
The Red Knights (11-1, 19-3) broke it open against the Bulldogs (7-5, 14-7) with a 10-0 flurry late in the second quarter.
Daniel Alcantara scored 30 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Ruben Rodriguez had 26 and Joey Chapman 15 for Reading, which lost 63-61 to Berks II champion Muhlenberg on Tuesday..
Foday Sillah scored 17 points for Wilson and Cam Jones had 14.
Reading will enter next week’s Berks playoffs as the No. 1 seed, and the Bulldogs will have a home game likely as the No. 3 seed.
The Red Knights made 18-of-21 free throws after making just 10-of-23 in their loss to the Muhls.
Wilson coach Matt Coldren was ejected in the third quarter after receiving his second technical foul and will not be permitted to be at the Bulldogs’ next game, which could be in the Berks quarterfinals.
Wilson suffered its second loss in as many nights after losing 56-43 at Berks Catholic on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs stayed within striking distance for much of the first half despite having three players with two fouls apiece and one with three.
Wilson sophomore Madyx Gruber buried back-to-back 3-pointers to force a 25-25 tie. Seamus Breslin’s backdoor layup cut it to 34-29 before the Red Knights went on one of their patented spurts.
Rodriguez was the central figure as Reading outscored Wilson 10-0 in the final 2:05 of the half. He fed Chapman for a fastrbreak basket, found Alcantara for a slam off a steal; hit Myles Grey for a three-point play; and then swished in a 3 to beat the horn.
Rodriguez finished the half with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists after the disappointing loss the previous night.
