Reading man gets probation for firing shots in Luzerne County

A Reading man who admitted firing shots that struck an occupied home in Luzerne County last year was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation.

Juan Lorenzo Abreu, 36, pleaded guilty in April to a misdemeanor count of propelling missiles across a roadway. Prosecutors withdrew additional charges against him as part of his plea.

President Judge Michael T. Vough imposed the probationary sentence, saying Abreu’s lack of a criminal history and family support warranted a non-custodial term.

Prosecutors said Abreu and several other men had been drinking before Abreu got into an altercation with someone along Diamond Avenue in Hazleton on April 5, 2023. After being struck in the face, Abreu fired 10 rounds at the other men, prosecutors said.

Two of the bullets entered a home on the north side of Diamond Avenue that was occupied by a woman and children.

On Thursday, Vough said Abreu was lucky nobody was hit during the incident.

The judge said Abreu’s probation can be supervised out of Berks County and ordered the firearm involved in the offense to be destroyed.
