The leader of Berks County’s largest school district has announced her plans to step down.
Dr. Jennifer Murray, Reading School District superintendent, will leave her post at the close of the school year. Murray has led the district, the fourth largest school district in the state, since 2021.
Murray has worked in the district since 1999, beginning her career there as an elementary school teacher.
“It has been an absolute honor to serve the students, educators and families of Reading School District for more than two decades,” Murray said in a statement announcing her departure. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, and I have the utmost confidence in the district’s continued success.”
Murray did not indicate a reason for stepping down from her post or her plans for the future.
A statement from the district said the school board will meet in the coming weeks to discuss a succession plan and will keep the public informed about the next steps in appointing a new superintendent.
The district’s statement says that during her tenure Murray played a pivotal role in shaping the district’s educational landscape. It says she spearheaded initiatives that have led to improved student outcomes, enhanced facilities and strengthened community engagement, and that under her leadership the district has seen significant progress in academic programs, technology integration and student support services.
Murray was hired as superintendent to replace Dr. Khalid Mumin, who left the district in October 2021 to lead the Lower Merion School District. Mumin would go on to later serve for 18 months as Pennsylvania’s secretary of education. He left the state post in November.
